Handmade is NOT child labor

Handmade at The Two Sisters: A Choice for Humanity and Honesty

"Handmade clothing from India? That must be made by children's hands or produced in poor conditions."

I get that question or comment regularly. And although it is sometimes confronting, I understand where it comes from. In the fashion industry, things often go wrong: low wages, poor working conditions, child labor and mass production in overcrowded factories. It is a harsh reality that unfortunately still exists. But at The Two Sisters we have consciously chosen a different path.

Our workshops: Small family businesses with great care for people

The Two Sisters clothing is not just produced anywhere. We work exclusively with small family workshops in India, where craftsmanship, respect and good working conditions are paramount. These workshops feel more like warm living rooms than cold production lines. They are places where people are seen, where they enjoy their work and where they are fairly rewarded for their beautiful craft.

Every time I return to India, I personally visit our workshops. I see the people we work with – not anonymous faces, but men and women I know by name. They welcome me like family, we share stories, dreams and ideas. Together we choose fabrics, refine designs and create unique garments.

The care and attention they put into each garment reflects the values we want to convey: honesty, connection and quality. These are not mass-produced items, but pieces with a story – your story and theirs.

Why handmade is different with us

  • Very good working conditions: Our workshops are safe and pleasant places where people work under conditions that you can share with pride. No exploitation, but appreciation.
  • Fair pay: Everyone in our chain, from makers to designers, receives a fair price for their work.
  • Family feeling: We do not work with large factories, but with small-scale, often family-run workshops. This ensures personal connection and an authentic process.

Child labor? Absolutely not.

Children have no place in our workshops – they should be playing, learning and dreaming. That is why we support The Blue House Project in Pushkar through your purchase. This special initiative offers children from poor communities access to education, shelter and food. This way they can grow up with opportunities and possibilities, instead of a life of poverty.

What does handmade mean to you?

At The Two Sisters, handmade means more than just a beautiful piece of clothing. It means:

  • A conscious choice for sustainable and fair production.
  • Connection between you, me and the people who make the clothes.
  • Positively impacting the lives of others – from the makers to the children in Pushkar.

When you wear our clothes, you are not just wearing something beautiful; you are wearing a piece of the story. A story of craftsmanship, love and respect.

“The power of handmade? It connects worlds, people and dreams.”

Thank you for being part of this story. Together we make a difference – one piece of clothing at a time. 💛
